Here are some essential steps to follow on refinishing wood furniture:

1. Remove any hardware, such as knobs or handles.

2. Clean the furniture thoroughly using a mild cleaner to remove dirt, grease, and residue. If the piece has old varnish or paint, you may need to strip it off using a paint stripper.

3. Repair any damages: Inspect the furniture for any cracks, dents, or loose parts. Repair any loose joints or broken parts using wood glue and clamps. Allow sufficient time for the glue to dry.
Fill any cracks or gauges in the wood using wood filler. Smooth out the filler with a putty knife and let it dry completely.Sand the repaired areas until they are smooth and blended with the rest of the surface.

4. Sand the surface: Use sandpaper or a sanding block to sand the entire surface of the furniture. This will help remove the existing finish, smooth out any imperfections, and create a good surface for paint adhesion. Start with a coarse grit sandpaper and gradually move to finer grits for a smoother finish.

5. Remove dust: After sanding, remove any dust particles from the furniture with a tack cloth or a damp cloth.

6. Prime the surface: Apply a coat of primer to the furniture to create a smooth base and enhance paint adhesion. Choose a primer that is suitable for the type of paint you'll be using. Use a brush or roller and ensure even coverage. Let it dry according to the primer manufacturer's instructions.

7. Paint:
Determine whether you want to paint or stain the furniture.
If painting, apply the desired type of paint using a brush or a paint sprayer, depending on the size and complexity of the furniture.
Use smooth, even strokes and make sure to paint in the direction of the wood grain. Allow each coat of paint to dry completely before applying additional coats. Sand lightly between coats if needed.
If staining, use a brush or cloth to apply the stain evenly, following the manufacturer's instructions. Wipe off excess stain with a clean cloth and let it dry.

8. Apply a protective finish: Once the paint has fully dried, apply a clear protective finish, to protect the painted surface from scratches, moisture and provide durability.
You can choose between options like varnish, polyurethane, or wax based on the level of durability and sheen you desire.
Use a brush, roller, or spray to apply the finish in thin, even coats. Let each coat dry before applying the next, and sand lightly between coats for a smoother finish.
Allow the final coat to dry completely according to the product instructions.

9. Reattach any hardware that was removed earlier.
Give the furniture a final inspection for any touch-ups or blemishes.
Clean the furniture again to remove any dust or debris from the refinishing process.

*Remember to always follow the specific instructions on the products you use and take proper safety precautions, such as wearing gloves and providing adequate ventilation when working with chemicals.
